5 Things You Should Know Before Opening a Squarespace Account

1. If you open a new Squarespace account it is in version 7.1 but if you have worked with SS before, you can still select your favorite template from 7.0 by scrolling to the very bottom of the template selector and choosing:

These templates are on the latest version of Squarespace.

Looking for templates from an earlier version?

2. If you choose a template in 7.1, you will see lots of options that look very different but what you are seeing is actually one template. Unlike 7.0 you can not change templates but all of the components are available to you so there are no wrong choices.

3. One of the biggest differences between 7.0 and 7.1 are banner designs. If you want a parallax scrolling affect, 7.1 does not currently offer this. Same for full bleed sliders with text, 7.0 is the better choice for you.

4. If you use 7.0, choose one of the templates from the Brine family as there are more options for customization in the style editor. For example, some of the older templates do not allow you to change the placement of the logo. Often times when I am hired to do a refresh or re-design, simply changing to Brine will address many of the clients frustrations.

5. I love Squarespace. It is my go-to and an awesome solution for informational sites and basic commerce but I encourage you to think ahead as far as possible to your long term goals. If you think you will require extensive customization or plan to embed multiple APIs, I encourage you to do more research to make sure this is the right CMS tool for you.
